Singapore Tour 2008

In
2004 large areas of Thailand and Malaysia were
devastated by a tsunami. The founder and current
Musical Director of SNYSB, Mike Booty,
immediately set about organising a concert to
raise money for the recovery operation.
Performing only a few weeks after the disaster,
the concert raised over £1500.
The money went via the Singapore Rotary to the
Rotary Club in Krabi, Thailand. Together with
other funds that had been raised, SNYSB’s
donation was used to build a new Community
Centre in Kao Lac. This Centre is today used for
a range of community activities, such as a
school, medical centre and meeting place.
SNYSB has now been invited to go Singapore in
August 2008. The primary aim is to visit Kao Lac
to see how the area has recovered from the
tsunami and to give a concert in the new
Community Centre. However, at the request of the
District Governor of the Malaysian Rotary Clubs,
the provisional programme has expanded to
include musical workshops and public concerts
with children in Singapore and Kota Kinabalu in
Borneo.
This is a unique opportunity for SNYSB and the
Band members. They will be able to see the very
real way their fundraising concert has helped to
rebuild the lives of the people of Thailand.
Furthermore, the music workshops will offer
encouragement and support to youngsters in the
Region.
SNYSB receives no direct funding and relies
totally on its own efforts to fund its programme
of concerts. Each participant of the tour will
have to pay their costs. This trip will be
expensive and Band members have already started
fundraising activities. Donations and
sponsorship from individuals, companies and
organisations will help to reduce the individual
cost. As in the UK, many members of the
Malaysian Rotary Clubs are businessmen and
representatives of large commercial
organisations and the association with the SNYSB
tour would be an ideal opportunity for companies
in the Diss area to publicise their business.
